Hobsons Bay and the historic Port of Williamstown
is only a short drive over the Westgate bridge from the CBD, and is where the notorius confederate “Shenandoah” Steam Clipper berthed for supplies and new recruits during the US Civil War. This cost the British Government dearly.

The Confederate Steam Ship Shenandoah was a fast and modern clipper originally designed for the India trade. She was fully masted as a sailing ship, and had the advantage of a steam engine as well. Her Confederate voyage started in a state of great secrecy in England and continued around the world for 58,000 miles. At first she was a wartime privateer; later a pirate ship with no nation to authorize her continued existence.
Shenandoah arrived at Hobsons Bay in Melbourne Australia, on January 25, 1865, where she filled her complement and her storerooms. She also took on 42 crew who were stowaways from Melbourne. However, they were not enlisted until the ship was outside the legal limits of Australian waters. The Shipping Articles show that all these 42 crew enlisted on the day of her departure from Melbourne, February 18, 1865. Nineteen of her crew deserted at Melbourne, some of whom gave statements of their service to the United States Consul there.
